Kermit Was Wrong…It Is Easy Being Green!

July 25, 2007 @ 9:46 am · Filed under Performers, Concerts, Singers, Bands, Events

We’re all aware that the environment is a major global concern. What’s interesting to see is how key public figures have recently demonstrated their willingness to take action to try to solve global warming. At times, it’s often questionable as to whether or not their efforts to solve the climate crisis are really effective. In fact, there’s been a fair amount of controversy and criticism. But, what’s clear is that they possess the ability to leverage their fame by appealing to the public with significant and widespread impact.

Earlier this month, we witnessed LIVE EARTH, which aimed to engage the masses with a 7-continent concert series in an effort to combat climate change. The huge endeavor boasted an impressive list of today’s biggest music performers and celebrities featuring Madonna, The Beastie Boys, Kayne West, and more.

In pursuit of a similar goal towards being “green,”
Linkin Park’s Projekt Revolution Tour
, which kicks off today, hopes to encourage environmental consciousness by donating $1 from each ticket sold to American Forests for their global “re-leaf” program, which plants trees to decrease the effects of global climate change.

Linkin Park’s lead single “What I’ve Done,” from their newest album, “Minutes to Midnight,” moves audiences with a powerful perspective on themes of human destruction and environmental devastation and reiterates all of the things that we may recognize yet haven’t acted upon.

Sometimes it’s just a problem of knowing how to get involved with environmental groups or organizations. There are plenty of opportunities to Discover things to do and make a difference. For example, if you’re looking to meet people with interests in sustainability or clean energy, you can head up to Berkeley for East Bay Green Drinks or attend The Green Festival! Or, perhaps you’re enthusiastic about building a sustainable business. There are people just like you that are interested in sharing innovative and emerging ideas in the green economy. For others like design aficionados, The Green City Gallery is hosting workshops and social and educational events. Check it out and see how you can get involved!

Blockbuster Summer Movies

July 20, 2007 @ 3:09 pm · Filed under Movies

Every man and woman in his late twenties and early thirties is still squirming in their seats at the chance to catch their childhood, animated friends on the big screen. No, I’m not referring to The Simpsons Movie (though we are itching for that too), Michael Bay’s transformation of the Autobots and Decepticons from Saturday morning cartoons to seemingly live action Transformers is cinematic magic that more than meets the eye. Both fans and box office charts agree in this case with stellar reviews and over $224M to date, solidifying Transformers place as a must see movie before kids are back to school.

Also now playing, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and Ratatouille which have delivered strong reviews and excellent opening weekends; the fun of the summer has been the debate over which of the three afore-mentioned movies will unseat Spider-man 3, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, or Shrek the Third as the summer box office hit. (Critically concerned, you didn’t miss much if you are waiting for that triumvirate of Thirds to come out on Netflix).
Speaking of numbers, if you are so inclined, Ocean’s Thirteen puts the gang back in the casino in what has turned out to be a better Rat Pack reunion than was Ocean’s Twelve and even the “fours” are in force this summer with Live Free or Die Hard and the Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.

Rest assured, the season is hardly over with Hairspray opening tomorrow and the much anticipated The Simpsons Movie right around the corner. Hairspray, of course, the opportunity to see John Travolta a little overweight and well, a woman, in John Waters’ classic story while the Simpsons are The Simpsons.

You can even find that movie magic out of the theater this summer as Matt Groening and J.K. Rowling leverage their creations to align the stars around related events. Looking for The Simpsons? 7-Eleven stores throughout the country have been remodeled into Apu’s shining example of convenience; 12 Kwik-e-mart locations bring you as close as possible to real Squishees, Buzz Cola, donuts, and photo ops with the Simpsons. Harry Potter fans, on the other hand, have not only the film to keep them entertained but the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, midnight on July 21st. Rest assured, every bookstore in America has a party planned and we’re here to help you find the details.

Add Zvents to Google Maps

July 11, 2007 @ 11:08 am · Filed under Zvents

Google, today, released MyMaps, a feature that allows users to personalize a map with content from 3rd party applications such as local weather, cheap gas prices, photos from Yahoo! Flickr, or videos from YouTube.

While using Maps, we thought you might enjoy seeing things going on in your neighborhood and getting a birds of view of what to do. Add Zvents’ local event search to Google Maps to discover things to do near you or where ever you might be traveling. With Zvents, your map dynamically updates with popular events from our millions of fairs, festivals, activities, concerts, classes, and shows. The application supports our natural language search engine enabling you to define what and/or the time frame of events that should be displayed and by simply dragging the map, you can literally browse your options.

I centered on Seattle, Washington and found a Hairspray Movie Premiere at 5th Avenue Theatre on Monday, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast playing at the Tacoma Musical Playhouse, and a Shakespeare Festival on the water at Luther Burbank Park. Moving the map south though I find Kelly Clarkson playing Rose Garden Arena just down the road in Portland, Oregon. Sure, she’s coming up to Seattle in a couple days anyway but I’m anxious to see her ;)

You might say we’ve put event search on the map.
